Liebster Award 2016

Oh, hey! My first blog nod! TravelExperia has nominated me for a Liebster Award… and as a super new blogger, I’ll take any kind of award I can get. 😀

Here are the questions they asked:

Who or what inspired you to travel?

When I graduated from high school, I had only been to Canada and like, Disneyland. I studied Spanish in high school though and then ended up transferring my credits to the local university. My first brush with international travel was a summer study abroad in Spain. CHANGED.MY.LIFE.

What is the one thing you cannot live without while traveling?

Ear plugs are the best. The best for camping, the best for Latin American hostels, and definitely the best to drown out early morning roosters in Africa.

HAMMOCK SQUARE

Favorite Place Ever

What is your favourite place in the world?

These are hard questions: I haven’t been everywhere yet! I think maybe the answer is simply, “in a hammock by the beach with a book and a cold beer.”

Do you prefer to travel solo or with a group and why?

One other person is maximum capacity for me, no groups. I love my solo adventures probably the most, but there are pros and cons to each. I just finished a month in Central America with a friend and it went well. I like my alone time, so it’s hard sometimes, but I also don’t like planning, so it was nice to have someone be like, “Hey, tomorrow the bus leaves at 8:00 a.m. and then we’ll transfer in Santa Ana and take a shuttle that will drop us off at our hostel. It will cost $12.37.”

What has been the cheapest trip you have ever taken?

I don’t know how to compare apples to apples for this one. I’m basically 100% nomadic at this point, so I’m not sure where one trip starts and another ends. I will say that using airline miles, my flight into El Salvador and then back from Cancun cost me $56 total. I’m still figuring out this mileage game, but I think I’m on to something.

What resources do you usually use while planning/ preparing for the trip?

Depends on the trip. When I went to Africa, I didn’t plan anything. I kind of like winging it. For my road trips around the US, I used Couchsurfing.com and FreeCampsites.net a TON.

I also have a “Travel” folder on my desktop. If I see an interesting travel idea online, I screen shot it, label it and throw it in there. It’s full of inspiration and ideas.

What is your favourite gadget for taking pictures?

I’m old school. I just bring a camera. No selfie stick, no GoPro, no iPhone: just a little Canon PowerShot. I do like the self-timer function for solo travel… the one that takes multiple shots in the course of a few seconds. I get awkward in front of the camera, so that helps me get a better shot.

If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only have 3 items, what would they be?

Besides fresh water and food? I think maybe a pen and paper… To write, doodle, pass the time. Plus maybe my ear plugs. I take my sleeping very seriously, and I imagine there would be exotic birds on my deserted island. 😛

Alaska SQUARE

This is Alaska. #BEST

What is the one place anyone should visit in your home country?

I’m from the US: this place it huge! But in 2014 I started road tripping this country of mine, and last November I finished all 50 states! The one place I always recommend is Alaska. It’s gorgeous up there! I’d recommend going in the summer (duh!) but then spend some time up there. It’s a HUGE state with so much to offer: a totally different way of life from the rest of the states and so much natural beauty and wildlife.

What are your top three bucket list destinations still to be checked off?

I really want to go to Cuba… and soon! As an American, I think it’s finally allowed. And as an obsessive salsa dancer, it holds a special place in my heart.

Plus a BIG trip in South America. I also obsessed with Latin America… all if it, sort of. And speaking Spanish makes me feel more confident traveling there.

I’ve been feeling a New Zealand trip coming on too.

What is the best advice you can give to new travel bloggers?

Be patient. Experiment. Find out what works for you. I’m a new travel blogger myself, so I’m not sure I’m at the stage where I can dole out advice. I just see a lot of people stressing themselves out about a blog: trying to make it a career from the get-go or get a million followers. I just update when I have a great story to tell or do a bit of social media during some down time. I’m doing it because I enjoy it.

That’s it! That’s a wrap. Another big THANK YOU to TravelExperia for the Liebster Award nomination!

My own nominations and follow-up questions coming soon!

I have never thought of visiting Alaska, but judging from your photos I should reconsider it…

Thanks again for the nomination! And, yes, Alaska is gorgeous. You can go whale watching, you can see (or climb!) North America’s highest peak, see the Northern Lights, everything!
